Watchdog group sues DOJ for records on judicial nominee Emil Bove

Watchdog group, American Oversight has filed a lawsuit in federal court to compel the United States Justice Department to release records related to Emil Bove, a senior DOJ official and federal judicial nominee facing multiple controversies.

The suit seeks to enforce seven Freedom of Information Act requests submitted earlier this year that American Oversight says the DOJ failed to respond to in the timeframe required by law.

The records requests focus on communications involving Bove and other DOJ leaders that mention the Alien Enemies Act, deportations to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, and internal discussions about a Jan. 31 meeting on New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ criminal case.

The lawsuit also seeks Bove’s communications with Stephen Miller,  Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency, as well as any emails referencing FBI Director Kash Patel, employee discipline, or ethics.

Bove, who was once a criminal defense attorney for President Donald Trump, has been nominated to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. His confirmation hearing was held last month, and a committee vote is expected in the coming weeks.
